Newton,
Bicknoller, West Somerset.
West Somerset offers the visitor the peace and
tranquility of the Quantock Hills - designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
- there is wonderful scenery and views plus the Brendon Hills and Exmoor National Park
with high
wooded cliffs, inland moors and steep river valleys. The coast runs from the
fossil beaches at Kilve towards Watchet marina/harbour taking in the
alabaster cliffs to Blue Anchor Bay & then onto the town of Minehead. Further
on from Minehead are the bays & beaches of Bossington, Porlock &
Porlock Weir.
Nestling in a pretty valley on the
western fringes of the Quantock Hills, Meadowsweet Farm in the hamlet of
Newton is a thatched
property dating back to medieval times. The farm & the 4 self catering
holiday cottages are set in 30 acres of
meadows and woodland over which visitors are free to wander. There are picturesque and nostalgic views of the West
Somerset Steam Railway & chickens
roam the farmyard providing fresh free range eggs for sale.
Within
a mile is the pretty village of Bicknoller with thatched cottages &
red stone houses a 15th century church,
village shop and Inn serving food. Steep paths from the village lead
to the top ridge of the hills with breath taking views. The surrounding unspoilt
countryside remains little changed from the days when it offered
inspiration to the famous poets Coleridge and Wordsworth. The village is
14 miles from the county town of Taunton - theatre, swimming, cinemas, bowling, cricket and racecourse
etc - and 12 miles from the coastal town of Minehead - beach, riding, fishing, golf etc. The
historic harbour town of Watchet is 5 miles. Dunster village with castle (N.T.)
